Easing the Long-existing Shortage of Civil Engineers
Our recent graduate employment survey has indicated that the career opportunities for our graduates can be classified into the following categories:

  • Laboratory
  • Further Study – overseas universities in the USA, the UK, Australia, Germany and Canada.


Achievements of our Graduates
Our Department has successfully educated and trained more than 1,500 graduates in the past 65 years. Some of our Civil Engineering alumni play important roles in various fields of Civil Engineering. One of the most outstanding fields is in bridge engineering. Here are some examples of the major bridges that our graduates had been involved:

  • Tsing Ma Bridge – the world’s longest suspension bridge carrying both road and rail, Hong Kong
  • Kap Shui Mun Bridge – the world’s second longest cable stayed bridge carrying both road and rail, Hong Kong
  • Ting Kau Bridge – a triple tower with single leg cable stayed bridge, Hong Kong
  • Oakland Bay Bridge – San Francisco area
  • Naupu Bridge – an important link to Pudong, Shanghai
  • Seohae Grand Bridge – a cable-stayed bridge located at Assan Bay of Korea
  • My Thuan Bridge – the 1st cable-stayed bridge in Vietnam.

 

Some representative outstanding alumni are:


Ir. Dr. LAU Ching-Kwong, J.P., the former Director of the Civil Engineering Department and the past president of the Hong Kong Institution of Engineers (HKIE).


Dr. TANG Man-Chung who is an internationally renowned bridge engineer, a member of the U.S National Academy of Engineering, a member of the Chinese Academy of Engineering, and an Honorary Member of the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE).


Professor CHEUNG Moe M. S. , the former head of the Department of Civil Engineering at HKUST.
